Jimmy Kimmel halted the jokes Thursday night to ask President Obama about the two police officers who were shot — non-fatally — in Ferguson, Missouri, early Thursday morning.
“Obviously, we don’t know yet what happened,” Obama said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the officers and their families.”
The president then reflected on the 50th anniversary of the march from Selma, Alabama, to Montgomery that he honored over the weekend.
“What was beautiful about Selma was reminding ourselves that real social change in this country so often has happened because ordinary people are willing in a nonviolent fashion to make their voices heard,” Obama explained. “And, I think what had been happening in Ferguson was oppressive and objectionable and was worthy of protest. But, there was no excuse for criminal acts.”
He went on to discuss the Justice Department report released last week that found much evidence of racial bias in the actions of the Ferguson Police Department.
