Texas seamstress sells Rick Perry voodoo dolls in protest of state’s new abortion law

It wasn’t enough that opponents of Texas’ new abortion law protested using tampons, urine and feces in front of the state capitol recently – because if all else fails, sticking pins into a voodoo doll of Gov. Rick Perry can do the trick as well.

Michelle Sinched, a well-known Houston corset maker, recently started producing “Gov. Goodhair” dolls in the likeness of the Texas Republican to protest the new law and raise money for Planned Parenthood.

“I was inspired to make them because I wanted to figure out something I could make that would send a message and raise money for Planned Parenthood,” Sinched told the Houston Press. “What’s better than sticking pins in Gov. Goodhair or burning him at your own doll sized stake?”

Interested patrons can buy two different versions of the “Gov. Goodhair” doll – a $25 doll featuring Perry wearing a sweater emblazoned with a coat hanger and the words “I love Texas women,” or a $30 doll of the governor in a suit. Both versions also come with three handmade tampon pins and can be personalized if desired. The pair can also be purchased for $50 according to Sinched’s Facebook page.

Sinched, who told the Press she was once a patron of Planned Parenthood, added that she was very grateful for their services, including helping her to get birth control and have annual check ups when she had no insurance and couldn’t afford it.

She considers herself to be both “pro-choice and pro-life,” saying that “no one ever wants to face the abortion choice but it happens” and “no one has the right to make that choice but the woman it affects.”

For the most part the protests around the state capitol in Austin have died down after the bill’s passage in both chambers last week. During the debate, however, there was no shortage of interesting and disturbing tactics used by abortion supporters, including yelling “Hail Satan” at pro-life activists and having young children hold inappropriate signs.

The bill, which bans abortions completely after 20 weeks without exception for incest or rape, was signed into law on Thursday.
