The campus carry debate continues in Texas, where 52 psychology professors at the University of Texas at Austin have signed a statement against concealed weapons on campus.
The psychology professors join more than 550 other faculty members at the UT-Austin campus who oppose the Texas law, set to take effect in 2016, that allows campus carry, according to the Daily Texan, the campus newspaper.
The history department has the second-highest opposition to the new law; 44 professors have signed the statement.
Gun Free UT, an anti-campus carry group, organized the law’s opposition, and has garnered almost 7,000 supporters for a petition on Change.org to repeal the law.
Campus opposition has taken the form of some unorthodox protest tactics in Austin. When the law takes effect, Texas will be one of eight states that allow campus carry. Another 23 states leave the decision to the college or university to decide.
