John Edwards trial verdict watch: Day 7

GREENSBORO, N.C.—It’s day 7 in the wait for a verdict from the jury considering campaign finance-related charges against former Sen. John Edwards—and there are signs of some kind of problem with the jury.

On Friday afternoon, U.S. District Judge Catherine Eagles ejected the press and public from the courtroom to discuss what she vaguely referred to at a public session as “a jury matter” that had come up.

The judge later said she might hold another hearing Tuesday morning to discuss the same issue. It’s unclear whether that session will also be closed, but she told lawyers for both sides to be at court a half-hour earlier than the usual start time for jury deliberations.

There were signs late last week that the jury was working its way through the case, though it was unclear if that meant it was resolving charges against Edwards or just putting some of them aside and moving on. Since it began deliberating, the jury has made several requests for exhibits, but has yet to ask a question about the 45 pages of instructions on the law that Eagles gave them just after closing arguments.
