The Hillary Clinton effect: Chipotle experiences disappointing sales, stock losses

Just days after Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton stopped into an Ohio Chipotle for lunch, the restaurant chain is reporting disappointing sales in the first quarter of 2015 and seeing stocks drop.

From Business Insider:

Chipotle just reported same-store sales that missed expectations and the stock is falling after hours. Same-store sales at Chipotle rose 10.4 percent in the first quarter, missing expectations for growth of 11.8 percent. In the fourth quarter, same-store sales rose 16.1 percent and in the same quarter last year, same-store sales were up 13.4 percent.

After these numbers came out, Chipotle shares declined up to 5 percent in after-hours trade.

Hillary Clinton made headlines when she visited a Chipotle in Maumee, Ohio, last week to purchase a lunch of a chicken bowl with guacamole. She didn’t leave a tip.

Did Clinton’s Chipotle jaunt prompt Americans to run for Qdoba? Let’s hope not for the fast-food chain’s sake. Chipotle foresees opening 195-205 restaurants in 2015.
