Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-V) ducked questions from a Fox News reporter regarding the FBI’s investigation into his wife, and instead pivoted to talk about healthcare.
The FBI is reportedly investigating if Jane Sanders falsified loan documents in 2010 while she served as president of Burlington College, which shut down May 2016 after failing to meet accreditation standards and declaring bankruptcy. The senator’s wife allegedly inflated pledged donation amounts to secure the loan.
“Burlington College ran into trouble almost immediately after the loan repayments were due,” Politico reported. “For the first fiscal year after the deal was signed, Jane Sanders signed documents that confirmed pledges of $1.2 million. But according to Burlington College financial records obtained by VTDigger, the college received only $279,000.”
Federal investigators are also looking into whether Bernie Sanders pressured banks into giving the loan, Politico reported. Bernie and Jane Sanders have hired attorneys.
Fox News producer Kara Rowland asked Sanders about the probe while he was in Washington.
“Where are you from?” Sanders asked.
“Fox News,” Rowland said. “CBS is reporting on this. Politico is reporting on this. Do you still believe it’s politically motivated, sir?”
Sanders ignored the question, and talked about the healthcare bill instead.
“Well, I’m glad that you’re interested in the fact that the Republican leadership is proposing legislation which would throw millions of people off of health insurance,” Sanders responded in the Fox News clip.
