Ben Carson defends pro-life stance on ‘The View’

Dr. Ben Carson appeared on The View Tuesday where he faced-off against the all-female panel on the subject of abortion.

Host Whoopi Goldberg confronted the Republican candidate on the issue, including Carson’s comments that there isn’t a “war on women, but there may be a war on what’s inside of women.”

Carson didn’t back down from his pro-life position.

“We’re killing babies all over the place,” he said. “I think people can probably understand in my case, I spent my entire career trying to preserve life and give people a quality of life, even operating on babies in the womb.”

“I get to meet those people when they’re adults, and productive adults,” Carson continued. “There is no way you’re going to convince me that they’re not important.”

Goldberg asked Carson if he met with any women who struggled with the decision to have an abortion. Carson said he felt very empathetic to women in that situation and wants the private sector to step up.

“What we need to do is make sure that we provide adequate daycare centers for these mothers so that they can get their GEDs, their Associate’s Degree, their Bachelor’s Degree, and their Master’s Degree,” Carson said.

Goldberg immediately jumped on him for assuming women who have abortions are uneducated.

However, Carson wasn’t wrong on the facts. According to a 2005 report by the Guttmacher Institute, 74 percent of women cite furthering their education as a prime reason they choose to have an abortion.

Co-host Joy Behar said the Republican Party should be applauding Planned Parenthood for providing birth control to women, helping avoid unwanted pregnancies. Carson said he did not oppose birth control.
