“The Daily Show” aired a segment Thursday night that featured a group of Washington Redskins fans being confronted by Native Americans upset about the team’s name.

Four fans were seated in an interview room with correspondent Jason Jones when a Native American group calling for a name change walked in. The encounter, which was planned, lasted only about a minute on-air and featured no audio of any exchanges that took place, belying the dispute that happened off-air before the piece ultimately was broadcast.
The fans participating in the segment told The Washington Post that they were unaware Native Americans would be confronting them directly during the shoot.
“It was disingenuous. The Native Americans accused me of things that were so wrong. I felt in danger. I didn’t consent to that. I am going to be defamed,” Kelli O’Dell, one of the Redskins fans in the piece, said to the newspaper.
“Daily Show” host Jon Stewart said just prior to playing the segment that the program is mindful of not airing pieces that are found to have deceived the participants.
“If we find out that someone in a piece was intentionally misled or if their comments were intentionally misrepresented, we do not air that piece. We would not air that piece,” Stewart said. “So that being said, I hope you enjoy the following piece.”
