Ever since Internet comedian Shiggy posted a video of himself dancing to Drake’s song “In My Feelings” at the end of June, social media has been set aflame with celebrities and millennial fans posting their own versions of the “In My Feelings Challenge.”
While the basic dance challenge consists of gesturing to a couple lines of the song, many have taken the challenge a step further by jumping out of a slowly moving vehicle and dancing alongside it—because, why not?
Unsurprisingly, a number of uncoordinated, wannabe influencers have hurt themselves while attempting the stunt—enough, in fact, to warrant the attention of the National Transportation Safety Board.
After seeing too many videos of people risking their lives in exchange for Instagram followers, the NTSB deemed it necessary to talk some sense into an Insta-crazed generation.
“Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death in the U.S.” said Nicholas Worrell, Chief of Safety Advocacy at the NTSB in an interview with The Blast. “Hopping out of a moving vehicle or jumping into lanes of traffic to show your dance moves is foolish and dangerous – to you and those around you. There’s a time and place for everything, but our nation’s highways and roadways are no place for the #inmyfeelings challenge.”
The NTSB followed up with a Facebook post last week.
It’s pretty sad that the feds have to remind us that jumping out of a moving vehicle is a bad idea. Then again, it’s also sad that they have to tell us not to eat Tide pods. In the age of social media, can we be trusted with anything these days?
