The Theta Delta Chi chapter at the University of California-Berkeley recently caused a stir when the fraternity decorated its haunted house with a hanging zombie that too closely resembled a lynching, reports The Daily Californian.
The zombie prop dangled from a window of the fraternity house’s third story. Its head was supposedly a dark grey color, but based on the picture, it’s easy to see how a passerby could have mistaken the intent of of decoration.
The fraternity’s philanthropy chair Devin Shoop assured The Daily Californian that “There was no intention whatsoever as to present it as a black person and it was a poor choice of head to use because it was a dark grey color.” Shoop organized the haunted house event.
In response to the zombie controversy, former Black Student Union Chair Salih Muhammad told Onyx Express Magazine, “This is another incident that convinces me and my community that this campus and society is not post-racial.”
Despite the controversy, the fraternity’s haunted house philanthropy, which will benefit Autism Speaks and the Green Stampede, will not be halted because of the incident.
