College students in Isla Vista, California, showed plenty of American pride on the Fourth of July, but they sure failed on their American history.
Most residents of the Isla Vista community are college students, with University of California, Santa Barbara, and Santa Barbara City College located nearby. But when the YouTube prank channel “Whatever” asked the students a series of questions about Independence Day, they showed a stunning lack of knowledge about the country’s history — or maybe they were just too drunk to answer seriously.
In the video, the narrator asked the young patriots, ‘Why do we celebrate July 4th?’
“We celebrate July 4th, because…a long time ago…what happened?” a man, who struggled to answer the question, said.
But one girl was much more confident in her response.
“Independence Day, we can do whatever the f**k we want! Freedom f**king rocks, take a shot!” she exclaimed.
Only a couple of the students were able to correctly answer what year the U.S. gained independence from Great Britain and how many stars and stripes are on the U.S. flag.
However, when asked what country we gained our independence from, responses went global. Several girls in the video seemed to think the U.S. gained independence from France, and another confusing response was a guess of the Canadian province, British Columbia.
