In response to a Change.org petition that called for Caitlyn Jenner’s Olympic medal to be revoked after her recent gender transition, the International Olympic Committee issued a statement last week saying that they would protect her medals.
Caitlyn, formerly known as Bruce, revealed her new name and female self last week on the cover of Vanity Fair.
Mark Adams, the IOC communications director, said, “Bruce Jenner won his gold medal in the 1976 Olympic Games and there is no issue for the IOC.”
U.S. Olympic Committee spokesperson, Patrick Sandusky, said that in addition to preserving her medal they will alter her name in their records should she request it.
“We admire Caitlyn Jenner’s courage and wish her all the best,” USOC spokesperson Patrick Sandusky told US Weekly in a statement.
“We would happily consider any athlete’s request to have his or her personal information updated in our records,” he added.
