Despite the federal government’s inflated spending, the amount the country’s schools spend per student fell for the first time in decades.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau and 24/7 Wall St., schools from across the country spent $10,560 per student in 2011 compared to $10,600 per student in 2010.
But that hasn’t stopped most states from spending thousands more on their students, with New York topping the list of states that shelled out the most for the past seven years.
The increase in spending hasn’t necessarily led to better test scores, though. Most of the states that spend the most on education rank in the top 15 for fourth- and eighth-grade math and reading proficiency exams, but New York and Alaska — the two top spenders — failed to measure up.
