Forget the talk about Donald Trump’s drop in poll numbers and Carly Fiorina’s surge. The most telling result out of yesterday’s CNN poll was for Gov. Scott Walker. Once considered a front-runner, he dropped to less than 1 percent following the debate.
In an interview with the Daily Caller though, senior Walker adviser Robert C. O’Brien let it be known that Walker isn’t quitting. “We think we’re going to come back. Gov. Walker is in this; he’s not getting out.”
While O’Brien did acknowledge that Walker’s campaign had “a rocky summer in the polls,” he also pointed out that other candidates considered “top tier” have as well.
The focus of O’Brien’s optimism seemed to be Walker’s electoral history. He became the only governor to survive a recall election in 2012 and was re-elected in 2014. O’Brien mentioned that “he’s always been counted out–and he’s always won.” He seemed to hope and plan on this playing out for his presidential campaign as well when he said “we’ve seen this story play out before.”
With regards to Walker’s debate performance, O’Brien said they would have liked more airtime but that “you can’t criticize his ideas or delivery.”
While O’Brien acknowledged other surging candidates like Donald Trump and Carly Fiorina have personality, he considers Walker to be the “best qualified.”
Walker at least won’t have to worry about dismantling his campaign over losing advisers though. O’Brien pledged to stick by him “until he is elected president or he decides to do something else.”
The track record of being elected twice and surviving a recall is an impressive one. It may also be bold to rely on for being elected president among a crowded field. If Walker is able to survive these poll numbers, it will be an impressive comeback.
