[WATCH] Colbert, Stewart make push for gun control

Just days after a lone gunman shot and killed 12 at the Washington Navy Yard, Comedy Central funnymen Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart have joined the Left in politicizing the tragedy, using their shows “The Colbert Report” and “The Daily Show” to push for gun control.

Both comedians devoted a segment of their shows Wednesday night to discuss the devastating shooting at Navy Yard. But instead of paying homage to the victims, Colbert and Stewart made a pitch for stricter guns laws, with a twist of comedic edge.

In a segment of “The Daily Show” called Depressingly Familiar Post-Tragedy Analysis, Stewart discussed shooter Aaron Alexis’ background, noting Alexis legally purchased a shotgun from a store in Virginia before heading to the Naval Sea Systems Command and had a history of violence.

“So, if only all of our law enforcement systems had been able to communicate with one another and have all this very pertinent information,” Stewart said of Alexis’ ability to purchase the firearm. “A reasonable person might conclude the shooter never may have gotten his hands on that shotgun. Unless that reasonable person is familiar with our nation’s background gun check laws.”

He then showed Republicans senators discussing the Second Amendment.

“The Constitution is not a suicide pact,” said Monica Crowley as Stewart flashed to a clip from Fox News.

“Well, I’m pretty sure it’s not a homicide pact either,” Stewart said.

Colbert took a more sarcastic approach to his push for stricter gun laws.

“It’s time to admit, all of us, that some dangerous items shouldn’t fall into the hands of the disturbed,” Colbert said. “What, no not guns. I mean we didn’t do anything about guns after Sandy Hook. Guns, you’re adorable. And for the last time, guns have nothing to do with gun violence.”

The host, continued, saying if Alexis didn’t have access to a military ID card, the country instead would be talking about a tragedy at a “less secure area, like a park or a Denny’s.”
