Granted that it’s Conan O’Brien, a towering man whose erratic humor forces you on your toes — but if he’s trying to get to know you, don’t screw this up.
The head honcho of Team Coco took some time Thursday to acquaint himself with his interns — Danielle, Julia, Evan, Pencil Guy and Glasses Woman — and they were the ones who brought the awkward funny. O’Brien asked what surprised them the most the first time they saw him.
“The first couple times I saw you behind the scenes, you were wearing this vest — sort of like, not really a jacket, but a vest,” Pencil Guy, who really did have a pencil in his shirt pocket, said. “I was really surprised to see that those are still ‘in’ … fashion … here … at the Conan show.”
Conan gestured to Pencil Guy to fork over his no. 2. He snapped it in half.
The idiosyncratic comedy continued from there, with Pencil Guy and Glasses Woman assuming the starring roles. The latter touted her efforts organizing the different types of sugar packets in the sugar tray as her contribution to the team — a recurring gag throughout the scene — as well as her job, when prompted by O’Brien to talk about her work as if she were meeting a stranger at a party.
“I intern at the Conan O’Brien show,” Glasses Woman told Conan, playing the role of the stranger.
“Ahhhhhhhhh!” he said, running his hands through his hair in uncontrollable shock. “AHHHHHHHHH! Yo yo yo! She interns for Conan! Does he wear a wig?”
