Hollywood stars don “iconic” fedoras to advocate for immigration reform

Nothing says immigration reform like wearing a fedora.

Several Hollywood stars, including actresses Julianne Moore and Cynthia Nixon, are pictured in the hats for “Fedoras for Fairness,” a new public service campaign promoting immigration reform that treats women fairly. It is a project of We Belong Together, a national coalition anchored by the progressive organizations National Domestic Workers Alliance and the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum.

Other celebrities participating in the campaign include actresses Rosie Perez, Sherri Shepherd and Ellen Barkin, actors John Leguizamo and Bobby Cannavale, model Christy Turlington Burns and director George C. Wolfe.

“We are gratified that so many talented women and men from stage and screen have chosen to stand up and speak out at this critical moment in the debate over immigration reform,” Vivien Labaton, co-chair of We Belong Together, said in a press release.

We Belong Together hopes that using the funny hats in the campaign will help persuade members of Congress to remember women as they draft their immigration reform legislation – as, after all, nothing catches people’s attention like funny hats. The Senate is scheduled to vote on the bipartisan Gang of Eight’s immigration reform bill in June.

The coalition even noted in the press release that they chose fedoras over beanies or bowlers because fedoras are “an iconic unisex American fashion accessory.”

There is a video that accompanies the celeb-filled photos, featuring personal anecdotes from the stars about their immigrant parents and grandparents.

“My mother immigrated to the United States from Scotland in 1950, when she was ten years old,” Moore says in the video.

“When my mother was eight years old, she immigrated to Los Angeles from El Salvador,” Turlington added.
