‘Original Star Wars fan’ Colbert nerds out over the new lightsaber design

Stephen Colbert has been known to take particular pride in out-geeking people.

He was in rare form Monday night, tackling the “lightsaber controversy”—the updated lightsaber design that has some die-hard Star Wars fans up in arms over the newly released trailer.

“I am the original fan of Star Wars,” Colbert began, claiming that he won tickets to see the first movie two weeks before its release. As a consequence, for a few weeks the other kids at school “thought my Darth Vader impression was just asthma.”

Colbert went on to break down what we’re dealing with: “It’s a lightsaber with too many lightsabers on it. It’s a ménage à sabre.”

Busting out a hand-drawn chart for his analysis, Colbert explained exactly how the design could work, despite the haters’ protests: “You just need three focusing crystal activators to split the plasma into perpendicular-blade energy channels! Confused? Well, you’ll understand in two weeks when you catch up to where I’m at!”
