Florida governor Rick Scott is in damage control mode after causing seven of the most ridiculous minutes to occur during a political debate, which have already come to be known as “Fangate.”
According to initial reports, Scott refused to take the stage Wednesday night because Democrat opponent Charlie Crist had an illegal fan under his podium.
Crist reportedly has a sweat problem and carts his portable fans with him everywhere to keep him looking fresh and picture-perfect.
The moderators awkwardly announced that Scott was boycotting the debate because fans were against the rules. They then waited for nearly ten minutes for Scott to finally come on stage.
On Thursday, Scott offered this garbled defense: “I waited to see if he–’til–we figured out if he was going to show up. He said he wasn’t gonna come to the–he said he wasn’t gonna come to the debate. So why come out until he’s ready?”
Scott’s campaign manager, Melissa Sellers, gave Politico a slightly more intelligible statement on the matter: “Rick Scott never refused to take the stage and debate. In fact, our campaign was not notified Charlie had even taken the stage because the last we heard, Crist was in an ‘emergency meeting’ with debate organizers pleading for his precious fan.”
