The Republican National Committee announced Thursday that Cincinnati and Las Vegas had dropped bids to host the 2016 GOP convention, leaving four cities in the running. The remaining contenders are Cleveland, Dallas, Denver and Kansas City.
“All cities excelled in nearly every aspect of their bids and presentation this year, but these four cities stood out from the field from the start of this process and deserve a deeper look by the full committee,” RNC Site Selection Committee Chairwoman Enid Mickelsen said in a statement issued after the announcement.
Both Cincinnati and Las Vegas cited the RNC’s criteria for a host arena as reasons for withdrawing from consideration. Each of the four remaining cities will receive official site visits from the RNC. Dates and times of the official site visits will be forthcoming.
Vegas had received a particular amount of buzz as a possible host. The New York Times reported that the city’s host committee would defer its bid to the 2020 GOP convention, however, keeping the city in the mix as a potential spot down the road.
Mickelsen said that the 2016 convention will allow both the GOP and whatever host city emerges to shine on the big stage.
“The 2016 convention will provide a unique opportunity to showcase our Party as well as the host city itself, and I’m confident we will choose the best possible setting to nominate our next Republican president,” she said.
