A professor at the University of Texas is leaving his job because he refuses to teach students that carry firearms.
Professor of Economics, Daniel Hamermesh, has been teaching at colleges since 1973 and joined the University of Texas in 1994. He retired and planned on teaching a few classes until 2017 until Gov. Abbot signed a law allowing students at Texas Universities to carry firearms on campus.

The Detroit Free Press reported that Hamermesh was so disappointed by the new gun laws that he decided to throw in the towel on his 42-year teaching career. He said that he hopes his resignation will start a trend, and more teachers will leave their jobs if guns are not taken out of the classroom.
“It’s just not worth the risk,” Hamermesh said to the DFP.
He also stated how he fears a potential confrontation with an armed student and an unarmed student, possibly after receiving a bad grade.
Another professor at Michigan State University School of Criminal Justice, Christina DeJong, voiced her concern about a similar bill being proposed in Michigan.
She’s afraid that guns in the classroom will cause a “silencing effect”–ironically, the way liberal professors usually silence conservative students.
