[WATCH] Famous writer Maya Angelou admits to owning a gun and shooting at intruder

Legendary author Maya Angelou supported President Obama this election, but it doesn’t look like she’ll be supporting his gun control proposals.

During an interview with TIME, Angelou admitted she not only likes guns and owns a gun, but has actually shot a gun at someone— to protect herself of course.

Angelou said she likes to keep guns around for her protection, a habit she apparently got from her mother, who always carried a gun.

“Well, I do like to have guns around, I don’t like to carry them,” she said. “But I like — if somebody is going to come into my house and I have not put out the welcome mat, I want to stop them.”

When TIME asked Angelou if she has fired a gun, the 85-year-old quickly responded, “Of course!”

“At a person?” the TIME reporter asked.

“Not at a person,”Angelou answered, “I hope.”

The writer then very theatrically told the story about using a gun on an intruder attempting to break into her home in North Carolina.

The well-known Obama supporter’s sudden gun advocacy is surprising at a time when the President is urging Americans to support his gun control proposals. But then again, the writer only supported Obama — not because of his policies— but because of his race.

Wonder if that gun Angelou fired at the intruder was an AR-15.
