NBC was prepared to give Jon Stewart ‘anything’ to host ‘Meet The Press’

NBC desperately wanted to hire Jon Stewart to host “Meet the Press” before they eventually settled for Chuck Todd, according to New York Magazine.

New York Magazine cites “three senior television sources with knowledge of the talks,” one of whom claimed NBC would have given Stewart “anything” to snag a contract:

“They were ready to back the Brinks truck up,” the source said. A spokesperson for NBC declined to comment. James Dixon, Stewart’s agent, did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

NBC was hoping to revive Meet The Press by ditching David Gregory, but Todd has so far failed to do so. He started strong with his exclusive interview with President Obama, but since then has returned to third place after ABC’s “This Week” and CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

The Stewart suggestion for the MTP host really isn’t too far out of the box. Stewart’s fellow Comedy Central “news host” Stephen Colbert will be making the jump to network television when he takes over for David Letterman as the host of the “Late Show.”
