A Georgia preschool student is currently facing disciplinary actions after packing a loaded gun in his backpack and bringing it with him to school.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the gun was spotted by a fellow classmate at Jordan Hill Elementary School in the Atlanta suburb of Griffin, who then told one of their teachers. The teacher took the boy’s backpack and the weapon to the school principal, who proceeded to call the boy’s parents and the police.
It is unknown why the boy brought the gun to school. The school also declined to release details on how he will be disciplined for the weapon.
The school also activated its parent notification call system to inform parents of the gun, and distributed written letters to parents on Wednesday about the incident.
“All students and families must be aware of the actions that violate school rules and understand the consequences,” Jordan Hill Elementary School Principal Anthony Aikens said in the letter to the parents. “We can avoid disciplinary action by each of you talking with your student about appropriate behavior at school.”
“Our students were not in danger at any time. I am calling you today in an effort to keep you informed and ask for your help in keeping our school campus safe,” Aikens continued, noting that the school’s number one priority is the safety of the students and its staff.
