Let’s be honest: most of us prefer to just not think about what we agree to when we download an app and click “accept terms.” Who has the time to worry about sorting out that nonsense? Angry Birds isn’t going to play itself, guys.
But Silent Circle, an encryption company, has produced an entertaining video that shows what happens when people actually read those lengthy terms and conditions out loud.
One by one, faces drop as users discover the expansive permission they’ve granted their apps—like the ability to read text messages, send emails without their knowledge, modify contacts, read personal profile information, use precise location, share calendar data “regardless of confidentiality or sensitivity.”
For the most part, mobile users decline to take much interest in protecting their privacy. Although most Americans say they’re concerned about their data, very few are proactive or choose to learn more.
And when security concerns do flare up, it’s often the result of incorrect or misleading information—like when everyone lost their minds over Facebook messenger or started sharing that fake “privacy notice” on their walls.
Unfortunately the video doesn’t make clear which apps’ terms are being read, but it’s still probably enough to send you scurrying to your phone to check your own apps.
