Rand Paul recently spoke with CBN News chief political correspondent David Brody about his advice for Republicans in advance of the midterm elections and his reaction to a senior Obama aide’s description of him as the “one of the most intriguing” potential Republican candidates in the 2016 field.
Back in July, senior Obama aide Dan Pfeiffer said of the Kentucky senator, “He’s the only Republican I think who has articulated a message that is potentially appealing to younger Americans.”
Paul called the pronouncement a “compliment” but stressed the need for his party to abandon its “same old” tactics that have not worked in the past.
“I think it is a compliment but I think also Republicans need to realize that if we’re going to win national elections again the same old same old that has been losing will not win again,” Paul told the CBN News reporter.
In particular, he underlined the need for Republicans to spend time among constituencies that have in the past voted Democrat.
“I’m spending a lot of time going to areas of big cities where people live in poverty and there is high unemployment,” Paul detailed, “and there is sort of this despair and I’m saying you know what? Give Republicans another chance.”
One of these areas, he said, is Detroit, Michigan.
“We have policies to reduce taxes in Detroit that would leave $1.3 billion in Detroit,” explained Paul. “It would help Detroit pull themselves up by their own bootstraps, and I don’t hear many answers coming from the Democrats. I also thinks the Democrats have taken this vote for granted.”
