Twitter offers name suggestions after Redskins trademark taken away

The campaign to rename the Washington Redskins scored a major victory on Wednesday, after an appeal board under the U.S. Patent Office canceled the team’s trademark registration.

“A substantial composite of Native Americans found the term Redskins to be disparaging,” the board declared, explaining its decision to cancel the trademarks.

The actual impact of the ruling on the team’s revenue remains to be determined. Even if the trademark cancellation is upheld after appeals, the team will still be able to keep its name, The Washington Post reports. However, in the event that other merchandisers appropriate the logo, the team will have less power to stop them, which could potentially impact profit.

If the ruling smacks of déjà vu, it’s because a similar decision was reached when the team was denied its trademark in 1999 — and it was overturned four years later. Redskins trademark lawyer Bob Raskopf is confident that the same thing will happen a second time.

Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), one of the most outspoken advocates for a Redskins renaming, hailed the patent ruling as the “writing on the wall” that the “name will change and justice will be done.”

While the legal system battles it out, a myriad of alternative team names have graced Twitter, many accompanied with the hashtag #NewRedskinsName.

Tweeters have offered all sorts of new names — naturally, since the possibilities are endless. Get a hint of the flavor below.
