Bernie Sanders wrote an essay about rape fantasies, claims it was just satire

If presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) were a Republican, he would have been accused of committing the equivalent to genocide in the “war on women.”

Mother Jones uncovered an old newspaper essay written by Sanders in the Vermont Freeman in 1972 where the future senator wrote about a woman who enjoys fantasies of being raped.

In the piece, Sanders described a man’s “typical fantasy” as “a woman tied up, a woman abused.” He also claimed that a woman “fantasizes being raped by 3 men simultaneously.”

Michael Briggs, the 2016 campaign spokesman for Sanders, gave a statement to CNN about the article, labeling it a “dumb attempt at dark satire in an alternative publication” that “in no way reflects his views or record on women.”

“It was intended to attack gender stereotypes of the ’70s, but it looks as stupid today as it was then,” Briggs explained.

Pulling from the Clintons’ playbook, Briggs described the old newspaper article as a distraction and suggested that Sanders is more interested in “the real issues confronting the nation today” instead of focusing on the past.
