Kansas College Republicans officially oppose death penalty

College Republican groups across Kansas passed a resolution that supports a repeal of the death penalty in the state.

The Kansas Federation of College Republicans announced on Aug. 20 that it “adds to its official platform a plank calling for the repeal of the death penalty in Kansas.”

“In order to legitimately maintain the right to claim a movement of life, the Republican Party must protect all life where it can, and never take life when it is unnecessary or when it can be avoided,” KSFCR Chairman Dalton Glasscock said in a Facebook post.

“It’s not just about life — it’s about the inherent distrust of the government that’s common in my generation,” Glasscock added in an interview with the Huffington Post.

The Kansas Republican Party has gone from supporting the death penalty to maintaining a neutral stance.

Kansas hasn’t executed anyone since 1965, when the state hanged George York and James Latham for the murders of seven people. Capital punishment remains legal in Kansas and the state has sentenced criminals to death, but appeals processes and practical issues have left the death penalty in limbo.
