Tom Hanks: I hope I vote for Trump’s re-election in 4 years

The wise Tom Hanks has relieved some of the post-election angst that is sweeping the nation. He used his awards speech at the Museum of Modern Art’s annual film benefit on Tuesday to call for an end to all of the doomsday talk and encourage us to come together as a country.

Without mentioning Donald Trump by name, the actor said:

“We are going to be all right. America has been in worse places than we are at right now. In my own lifetime our streets were in chaos, our generations were fighting each other tooth and nail, and every dinner table ended up being as close to a fist fight as human families will allow.

We have been in a place where we have looked at our leaders and wondered what the hell they were thinking of. We’ve had moments with the administrations and politicians and senators and governors in which we have we’ve asked ourselves ‘Are they lying to us or do they really believe in this?’ That’s all right.”

Hanks went on to say that our Constitution will protect us no matter what and our country will continue to move forward.

“That journey never ceases, it never stops. Sometimes, to quote a Bruce Springsteen song, it’s one step forward two steps back, but we still aggregately move forward. We who are a week into wondering what the hell just happened will continue to move forward.”

Hanks even told The Hollywood Reporter, “I hope the president-elect does such a great job that I vote for his reelection in four years.”

This week, Hanks was also announced one of President Obama’s 21 recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The White House cited his many film accomplishments, as well as his advocacy for social and environmental issues, and for veterans and their families.
