House Democrat proposes bill to ban guns from all areas of airports

House Democrats are chanting, “Never Forget,” after an Atlanta man legally brought a gun to the airport earlier this month and didn’t shoot anyone.

Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) announced Monday that he is introducing legislation to ban guns in airport areas that are located before security checkpoints, where it is currently legal to carry a firearm in some states.

According to The Hill, the Airport Security Act of 2015, will prevent anyone other than a police officer from carrying firearms in an airport.

“Airports are the gateway to commerce throughout the world and the front door to the communities they connect for millions of passengers who visit the United States each year. It defies logic that we would allow anyone other than law enforcement officials to carry a loaded gun within an airport. This bill is simple common sense,” Johnson said in a statement.

This bill would expand Homeland Security’s jurisdiction to include non-secure areas of airports and would take precedence over local laws that allow weapons.

“Law-abiding gun owners would still be able to carry guns if they are unloaded and contained in clearly marked, locked cases. Airports would also be required to post signs that clearly indicate they are gun-free zones,” Johnson continued.

As Democrats have reminded the American public time and time again, nothing makes people safer than a sign telling criminals an area is a gun-free zone.
