Does sexually explicit material belong in schools? No, and people have enough common sense to agree.
A new Rasmussen poll found that 89% of U.S. voters say it’s important for schools to inform them of what their children are learning. Also, strong majorities don’t want obscene materials in these schools.
‘EVEN IN WILD WYOMING’: PARENT GROUP RIPS SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR SECRET GENDER TRANSITIONS
The poll found strong opposition among voters to “books containing explicit sexual depictions of sex acts” in public school libraries. It found that 69% oppose these books being present in high school libraries, 79% oppose them in middle school libraries, and 85% oppose them in elementary school libraries.
Politicians should respect voters’ wishes and capitalize on this issue, given its massive popularity.
People want age-appropriate books and course materials in their children’s schools. Given that nearly all K-12 public school students are minors, it’s understandable that parents do not want their children to see depictions of sex acts.
Parents aren’t asking for these books to be made illegal by their local, state, or federal government. They just don’t want their hard-earned tax money propping up this material.
A book such as Gender Queer: A Memoir by Maia Kobabe doesn’t belong in schools. The problem with Gender Queer isn’t that it’s an LGBT book. The problem is that the book is a graphic novel that features pictures of sex acts, including someone performing oral sex.
Similarly, It’s Perfectly Normal: Changing Bodies, Growing Up, Sex, and Sexual Health by Robie Harris doesn’t belong anywhere near minors. The book depicts children — a boy in one image and a girl in another — masturbating and tells them how to do it. The book also tells children that masturbation feels “sexy.” Plus, it depicts adults having sexual intercourse.
Some liberals and progressives think these kinds of books are great and belong in schools across the country. These people deserve condemnation.

It’s not bigoted not to want children exposed to sexual depictions. It’s creepy and disgusting that some school officials and politicians think this is a good idea. And it’s a waste of money to prop up these kinds of titles with taxpayer funding. The taxpayers don’t want their money paying for these books. If some families want to buy them, there are no laws against that. However, schools should not push this kind of material on children, including via suggested reading lists.
Parents want their children to receive a good education. They are not asking for books depicting sex in their children’s libraries. If liberal politicians want to defend these books — while some on their side have fought to ban classic American literature such as To Kill a Mockingbird and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn — they can try. The polls say that this battle will end poorly for their side.
