One year into Trump’s second term, it’s promises made, promises kept

On Jan. 20, 2025, President Donald Trump promised the American people a country that would “soon be greater, stronger, and far more exceptional than ever before.”

This week marks exactly one year since Trump made that promise, and we have seen outpourings of exceptionalism span far and wide throughout this country since then, thanks to the leadership of his administration.

As the chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, I have had the opportunity to begin my chairmanship in direct alignment with the president, and it is only under the guidance of the president that this committee has been able to accomplish the many successes we have in only a year’s time.

The Committee on Energy and Commerce has an extensive jurisdiction that includes nearly three-quarters of the economy, spanning from issues such as consumer protection and food and drug safety to energy policy and the internet. When I was elected chairman, I committed to delivering the America First agenda of Trump and House Republicans.

The first session of the 119th Congress was a historic one; notably, the committee worked to end wasteful spending on left-wing green energy projects, support the rapid innovation of American industry, and preserve and protect Medicaid from waste, fraud, and abuse for the Americans who are most in need for generations to come.

The Working Families Tax Cuts bill, which was appropriately signed into law on July 4, 2025, directed the refueling of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, implemented pro-innovation wireless spectrum policies, and secured the Medicaid program for the people it was designed to serve, ensuring they will be able to access the care and treatment they need.

When it comes to Medicaid, through commonsense solutions that restore personal accountability for able-bodied adults and give states more flexibility and control over their Medicaid programs, we strengthened the program, protected taxpayer dollars, and improved patients’ access to care.

Further, in the WFTC, the Committee on Energy and Commerce saved over $1 trillion for taxpayers and advanced commonsense policies that unleash affordable and reliable American energy, support technological innovation to win the race for artificial intelligence dominance, and ensure Americans have access to the care and treatment they need.

Throughout this past year, the committee has led the way in undoing the harmful and burdensome regulations that piled up during the Biden-Harris administration. Working with the Trump administration, we have led the charge to pass numerous Congressional Review Act resolutions that directly undo harmful electric vehicle mandates, restore consumer choice, and lower costs for hard-working American families.

Committee Republicans are committed to advancing American technological leadership, and this has been a key part of our agenda. The United States has the capital and brainpower to lead the world in innovation and next-generation capabilities, but we need a regulatory framework to match that. Trump has secured over a trillion dollars’ worth of AI investments in American communities, which can only materialize if lawmakers choose to encourage development and deployment.

While prioritizing innovation and outcompeting adversaries such as China, 21st-century challenges require 21st-century solutions. Working alongside Trump and first lady Melania Trump, we were able to pass the TAKE IT DOWN Act into law. This bill delivers strong protections for the victims of AI sexual exploitation online by targeting the harassers and providing a path to remove the content.

When it comes to critically important healthcare policies, the committee passed legislation into law that follows Trump’s promise of keeping extremely lethal and dangerous drugs off our streets. We bolstered programs that continue empowering first responders, supplying recovery resources, and increasing access to treatment options for individuals with substance use disorders.

The Department of Health and Human Services made historic investments into rural health through the creation of the Rural Health Transformation Program, with all 50 states receiving hundreds of millions of dollars to bolster healthcare delivery in those communities; we passed legislation that bars federal funding from going toward gender transition procedures for minors; and in tandem with HHS, we continued our strict oversight of the national organ procurement and transplantation system to ensure patient safety is protected and upheld to the utmost extent.

Congressional Republicans have partnered with the White House to deliver what Americans asked us for: a stronger economy, an accountable government, and a healthier nation. That’s why this Republican majority has cut taxes, unleashed American energy, strengthened Medicaid, and targeted the spread of deadly fentanyl that has killed millions of Americans.

Just as Trump and Republicans promised, in just the first year, we are already delivering commonsense solutions to re-center the needs of the American people.

Promises made. Promises kept.
