Democrats still don’t get it on transgender issues

As the country heads into this fall’s midterm elections, both parties are anxious to increase their ranks.

For Republicans, that means seeing what voters have liked about President Donald Trump’s second term. It also means reviewing the kind of rhetoric used by GOP leaders in D.C. and nationwide.

Democrats face a more daunting task. The party will attempt to take back not only Congress this fall but the White House in two years.

One issue they still need to contend with is transgenderism. For years, the Left has collectively acted as if conservative concern over transgender encroachment upon our daily lives is unfounded. But it takes little effort to see how this militancy bleeds into both public discourse and policy. Bathroom facilities, gender transitioning, and sporting events are just some of the areas where biological truth is threatened.

And it is not the so-called extremists who are launching complaints. Ordinary Americans, across the center and both parties, take issue with the onslaught. Surprisingly, Democrats still believe they can make inroads on this issue.

In a piece at the New York Times titled Why Are So Many Democratic Politicians So Far Out of Touch?, writer Thomas Edsall says: “Going into the midterm elections and the presidential contest two years from now, there is what can best be called a widespread churning in Democratic and liberal circles over transgender issues.”

Edsall cites a study by the Searchlight Institute, described as a centrist yet still Democratic think tank. The study’s conclusion spells out how Democrats should move forward with the transgender issue in both elections and regular policymaking.

Among other things, the study says, “…Americans hold conservative attitudes where certain policies related to gender identity and transgender rights are concerned.” On both gender transition and sports, it says, Americans prioritize protecting children. Regarding athletic participation, the study concluded that “sports participation is simply not a winning issue right now — even among left-leaning voters (only a third of Democrats think trans kids should play on sports teams matching their gender identity).”

And when it comes to gender “transition” for minors, the majority remains on the side of children: “…Americans broadly oppose gender transition access for minors. Voters do not support puberty blockers or hormone treatments being available to people under eighteen — 61% say that these treatments should not be available, even with approval from the minor’s parents and doctors. This opinion is stable across partisanship, racial lines, and among those who know and don’t know trans people.”

Democrats are foolish to believe average voters are willing to bend on an issue that asks them to discard their common sense. This is especially true when children are directly affected. Adults who push gender transition for minors are opposed by the majority of both parties. As for unfairness in sports, it is simply not tolerated by a majority of Americans, regardless of how they vote. A Pew Research survey from February 2025 shows that Americans have become “more supportive of restrictions for transgender people”, not less. But many individuals in the legacy media, entertainment industry, and even in politics act as if the opposite were true.

If Democrats want to sway centrists or disaffected Republicans in the midterms or the next presidential election, they will be sorely disappointed if they continue down this path. Even most Democrats aren’t on board with the kind of policies that prey on minors through hormonal or surgical manipulation, or ask them to compete against the opposite sex.

While the Democratic Party strategizes and pushes a softer approach on the issue, Republicans should stand firm. We can still view transgender individuals as human beings who possess inherent worth without embracing the delusion of their chosen gender identity. And when it comes to children and how they are preyed upon, there can be no compromise.

TRUMP SHOULD CUT OFF THE WOKE NATIONAL ACADEMIES

The Democratic Party playbook openly acknowledges the difficulty of convincing Americans on the Left and Right that minors should be allowed to “transition” and trans athletes should be welcomed on the field of play among their opposite sex peers. That they face such an uphill battle on these issues says something positive about our society. But the party is only concerned with winning others to their side, not in doing the right thing by children or adults.
