WATCH: Jenner says trans athlete ‘rules have to be a lot more stringent’

Caitlyn Jenner said the NCAA rules concerning transgender athletes’ participation in sports need to be “a lot more stringent.”

Jenner, a biological man who identifies as a woman, appeared on Fox & Friends Wednesday morning and said that while Lia Thomas, a transgender athlete who competed for the University of Pennsylvania women’s swim team, has played by the rules, there is an unfair advantage.

“This is not Lia Thomas’s fault. She played by the rules,” Jenner said. “Really, my concerns are with the NCAA. Their rules have to be a lot more stringent. I think they have to be more difficult.”

“I don’t think just one year of hormone replacement therapy is enough,” Jenner continued. “I mean, I’ve been on, for seven years of full transition, been on hormone replacement, and I can still hit the golf ball 280, 290 yards. There’s a lot left over. So I’m not blaming her. I’m just blaming the system right now. That has to be seriously looked at.”

On Tuesday, Thomas announced Olympic aspirations, saying, “I intend to keep swimming.” While appearing on Good Morning America, the swimmer added that other people’s permission is not needed “to do the sport I love.”

TRANSGENDER FEMALE ATHLETES HAVE PHYSICAL ADVANTAGE, DOCTORS CONFIRM

In response to Thomas’s desire to pursue swimming in the Olympics, Jenner reiterated the need to protect women’s sports for biological women while noting that there is not an easy solution.

“I have said from the beginning, I don’t think biological boys should compete in women’s sports. It’s just not fair,” Jenner added. “I have always been out to protect women’s sports. I think we need to do it. And the only way you are going to do that, as far as the trans issue, is to really look at these rules and find out what is going to work where a trans athlete does not have a big advantage over the cis women, the cis athletes … and to be honest with you, there is no one answer — I don’t think there is a right answer right now.”

Jenner noted, from personal experience and from looking at Thomas next to biological female swimmers, that the advantage of being a biological male “never really goes away.”

“I think it’s very difficult, you know, she did it to be happy,” Jenner said. “On the other hand, she may be happy, but I’m sure the girl, the cis girls in the blocks next to her, looks over and sees this very large woman who she knows she can’t beat, I don’t think she’s that happy.”

Jenner’s interview follows a report of doctors confirming that transgender female athletes have a physical advantage over their biological female opponents despite taking testosterone suppressants.
