Biden would turn abortion into a sacred ceremony

With astonishing remarks in an Oct. 18 interview, President Joe Biden has fully entered a morally degenerate realm in which abortion is seen not merely as a legal option but as a public good.

Biden would pursue this twisted idea by treating abortion not just as ordinary healthcare, itself obviously a controversial stance, but as a privileged procedure meriting extraordinary support. Once an abortion opponent, Biden has joined the radical Left in making abortion almost into a fetish, as if procuring one is a virtue or talismanic rite. And he would use confiscatory taxpayer dollars not just for abortions themselves but for appurtenances surrounding it.

STACEY ABRAMS’S CLOSING ARGUMENT: WEATHER INFLATION BY ABORTING ALL YOUR CHILDREN

In answer to a question from a 26-year-old medical student, Biden said he supports creating a special federal fund to pay for abortions, for time off work for abortions, and even for child care for the already-born children of the women undergoing abortions. This comes on top of him repeatedly saying in the past few months that codifying abortion protections into law for the whole nation is so important that he supports eliminating the legislative filibuster, a 200-year-old Senate procedural protection for large minorities, for that particular purpose even if for no other.

Ponder this for a while. If someone breaks a leg, then private insurance (sometimes federally subsidized) would surely pay for surgery to fix it. But there’s no special government fund (no taxpayer dollars) for paid leave from work or for extra child care. Ditto for cancer treatments or for the insertion of heart stents. In sum, for Biden, abortion is more important, more deserving of special support and privileges, than treatment for cancer or heart defects.

There is something quite literally morbid about this outlook.

Again, someone can recognize how outlandish, how pathological this approach is, even if one believes abortion should be a legal option. And all of us, without fail, should look with compassion upon a woman faced with an unexpected pregnancy, should offer emotional and practical support, and should continue the compassion whether or not we agree with how she handles the pregnancy.

Still, the government has no business conscripting financial support for abortion, and for special job- and child-care payments related to it, from those with deep moral or religious convictions against it. Imagine the outcry if the government taxed Muslims to pay for swine to be slaughtered for a pork feast. For pro-lifers, the Biden proposal is infinitely worse — indeed, monstrous.

A large minority of people believe abortions should be entirely outlawed except in cases of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother. A large majority of people believe that, at the very least, abortion should be subject to significant restrictions. Instead, Biden would not only force the entire nation — Utah Mormons, Alabama Evangelicals, and Baptists among them — to make abortion legal up to the moment of birth but also to pay for abortions and related time off work.

This is barbaric. Biden’s handlers should not just walk this idea back but kill it in the cradle.
