If reports of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade become official, Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD) vowed to call for a special legislative session to restrict abortion.
Late Monday night, a leaked draft of the majority opinion in Dobbs v. Women’s Health Organization seemed to indicate that the Supreme Court voted to strike down Roe v. Wade, allowing states to make their own laws on the controversial topic of abortion.
Noem took to Twitter shortly after the news began circulating, promising South Dakota would take action to “guarantee that every unborn child has a right to life” — if the Supreme Court does, in fact, strike down Roe v. Wade.
“If this report is true and Roe v. Wade is overturned, I will immediately call for a special session to save lives and guarantee that every unborn child has a right to life in South Dakota,” Noem tweeted.

As of Tuesday morning, the Supreme Court had not confirmed or denied the draft’s authenticity.
Attorney General Ken Paxton (R-TX) also took to Twitter in support of the leaked report.
“I hope that #SCOTUS returns the question of abortion where it belongs: the States,” Paxton tweeted, noting his anti-abortion efforts.
“I’ll con’t to ensure that TX protects the unborn & pray for the end of abortion across our nation,” he added.
While conservatives are holding out hope that Roe v. Wade will be overturned, Democratic governors are declaring that their states will safeguard access to abortion.
“Hell no! In Illinois, we trust women,” Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D-IL) tweeted. “We cannot let the most profound and personal rights be violated.”

California’s Gavin Newsom, Washington’s Jay Inslee, and Michigan’s Gretchen Whitmer were among those who joined Pritzker in sharing their displeasure about the leaked report.
