NYC Mayor Eric Adams unveils plan to curb gun violence

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, promised to crack down on illegal firearms on Monday while unveiling his policies to curb gun violence.

The mayor alluded to the death of police officer Jason Rivera, a 22-year-old who was killed in Harlem last week with an illegal firearm.

“This is the gun that killed our young officer Friday night,” Adams said, while presenting a picture of the .45-caliber Glock pistol and high-capacity magazine, which is illegal.

The New York City Police Department will crack down on the 30 police precincts that contain 80% of New York City’s violence, according to Adams.

Part of this effort includes the deployment of “Neighborhood Safety Teams,” undercover police officers, and new technology that can identify individuals with firearms at a distance, he said.

The latter is being compared to a noncontact form of the controversial “stop and frisk” policy, according to a report.

“My fellow New Yorkers, we are going to do a lot more than pray. Going to turn our pain into purpose. We’re going to unite and take action,” Adams said.

“We will not surrender our city to the violent view … and we won’t go back to the bad old days. We’re going to get trigger pullers off the streets and guns out of their hands.”

Funding will increase for NYPD’s Gun Violence Suppression Division, a team of detectives dedicated to seizing illegal guns and developing cases against traffickers and sellers, and judges with “a demonstrated commitment to keeping violent criminals who use guns off New York City streets” will be appointed, Adams said.

“It is illegal to carry a gun in our city. Yet our police officers take them off the streets every day in record numbers. Since Jan. 1, when I took office, officers have taken 350 illegal guns off the street. Last year, over 6,000 guns were confiscated,” he said.

“Officers are doing heroic work, getting guns off the streets, but traffickers keep the guns coming. That must end. We must stop the flow of illegal guns in our city. The ‘iron pipeline’ must be broken.”
