Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser attacked Republican candidates, such as Dr. Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania, for failing to define their position on abortion, suggesting that it left them vulnerable to attacks from abortion proponents on an issue that dominated the election cycle following the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade in June. Dannenfelser noted the success in Florida of Sen. Marco Rubio, who was quick to endorse a 15-week national abortion ban.
ABORTION RIGHTS FARE WELL IN BALLOT MEASURES, BOOSTING DEMOCRATS
The recriminations come after abortion rights performed well on state ballot measures and helped propel Democrats to victory in key states.
“So the strongest message, I believe that we should take away from here is how our candidates, our pro-life candidates, should be positioning themselves rooted in principle,” Dannenfelser said.
Frank Cannon, a political strategist for the group, said Republican leaders, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, have to do a better job at driving the messaging on abortion.
“You need leadership that defines what the party is for. That was absent,” Cannon said.
Dannenfelser said that presidential candidates should “communicate clearly” about their abortion stances, whether that be a “heartbeat law” banning abortion very early in pregnancy, a 15-week national ban law, or something else.
In response to voters in several states approving amendments enshrining abortion rights in their constitution, including Michigan, California, and Vermont, Dannenfelser noted that abortion opponents have to be clear what type of legislation they want to see implemented in certain states.
