Fox News at Night anchor Shannon Bream’s newest book, The Mothers and Daughters of the Bible Speak: Lessons on Faith From Nine Biblical Families, was released Tuesday.
Bream’s first book in the Women of the Bible Speak series, The Wisdom of 16 Women and Their Lessons for Today, was released in March 2021 and appeared on the New York Times bestseller list for 15 weeks in a row.
“It’s striking to me that these women are so relatable, all these centuries later,” Bream told the Washington Examiner. “Like us, they make good and bad decisions. Some endure trials and suffering that are hard to understand, but what’s consistent through all the stories is that God was working the entire time.”
The latest book, looking specifically at biblical mothers and daughters, surveys nine relationships that highlight stories of God moving in moments of despair, including Ruth and Naomi, Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Esther.

“The moment that is just beyond despair is often the moment when God acts — in Ruth’s and Naomi’s lives, in the lives of Jesus’s disciples, and in our own lives too,” Bream writes in the book.

In the book, Bream does not shy away from difficult or uncomfortable stories. The trauma that comes from sexual violence is discussed through the life of Dinah, Jacob and Leah’s daughter.
“God Himself promises to bind up our wounds, to be close to the brokenhearted and save those ‘who are crushed in spirit’ (Psalm 34:18),” Bream writes. “The process of recovery and forgiveness can be long and agonizing, but it is possible.”
“So, it’s important that we constantly refocus our relationship as daughters of God on the unwavering truths of His character,” her book continues. “When others abandon, He is ever-present (Proverbs 15:3). When others condemn, He is full of compassion (Psalm 86:15). When others neglect, He is so attentive that He knows every single hair on our heads (Luke 12:7). When others tear down, He is our Healer (Psalm 147:3). When others are uninterested, He is waiting to listen to our fears and to give us peace in return (Philippians 4:6–7).”

Bream has also found hope in the story of Mary, the mother of Jesus, as she looks at the war in Ukraine unfold.
“God is involved in every part of this journey,” she said. “He is as interested in the details of your struggle, or the struggle of these men and women in Ukraine, as He was the plight of Mary and Joseph all those centuries ago.”
