Trump beats Biden among likely voters and independents in Iowa 2024 rematch poll

Donald Trump boasts a double-digit lead over President Joe Biden in a new poll examining a potential 2024 rematch in Iowa.

The former president also leads Biden, who is facing low approval numbers eight months into his presidency, with support from independents, but Trump faces some warning signs in what could be a fight in Iowa’s first-in-the-nation Republican caucuses.

Trump prevailed in a face-off by 11 points, 51%-40%, among all likely Iowa voters, according to the results of a Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll released on Sunday. The other 9% was split among those who said they would not vote for either candidate or were not sure.

Trump defeated Biden in Iowa by 8 points, 53%-45%, just over a year ago in 2020.

Trump’s advantage among independents in the new poll came in at 8 percentage points, beating out Biden 45%-37%.

In addition, pollsters noted findings among Iowans who identify as Republican leave an opening for potential caucus challengers.

Sixty-one percent said they align with the party versus the 26% who said they were more aligned with Trump, and that sentiment prevails across demographics, including in rural areas and among evangelicals.

“It opens the door a bit for Iowa,” said pollster J. Ann Selzer, president of Selzer & Co.

The poll was conducted by Selzer & Co., surveying 810 Iowa adults, including 658 likely voters, between Nov. 7 and 10. The survey has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 3.4 percentage points among all Iowans, and 3.8 points among likely voters. The question about allegiance to Trump or the GOP, asked of 264 Iowans, has a larger margin of error of 6 points.
