U.S. Marshals found “deficiencies” at the Washington, D.C., jail where inmates charged in connection to the Capitol riot are being held.
The admission in a court filing Monday as part of the case involving Robert Gieswein, a Colorado man accused of assaulting a Capitol Police officer, offers credence to what inmates, their attorneys, and advocates have claimed for months: that Jan. 6 defendants are being mistreated.
U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves wrote the U.S. Marshals Service reported on Nov. 1 a “number of concerns” about the conditions at the Central Detention Facility, which led to a transfer of inmates. However, it found the conditions at the Central Treatment Facility, where Gieswein is being held, to be “largely appropriate and consistent with federal prisoner detention standards.”

But now, the U.S. government “understands” the U.S. Marshals Service has continued to monitor conditions at both locations.
“USMS reports that it has observed additional deficiencies through its monitoring, including several deficiencies at CTF,” Graves said in the filing, including in a footnote.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican, visited the jail and has been a leader in calling attention to its conditions. The congresswoman released a report in December titled “Unusually Cruel: An Eyewitness Report From Inside The DC Jail,” describing poor conditions in the Jan. 6 wing. Descriptions included cells that “were extremely small, composed of a single toilet, sink, and a small cot” and walls with “human feces, bodily fluids, blood, dirt, and mold.”

The Washington Examiner reached out to Greene for comment on the court filing in the Gieswein case.
“This is more evidence proving the conditions at the DC Gulag are atrocious and inhumane,” the congresswoman said. “This is more evidence proving J6 pre-trial detainees are being mistreated for being conservative Trump supporters. And this is more evidence proving left-wing political activist Deputy Warden Kathleen Landerkin must be terminated and investigated immediately!”
Greene also asked: “When will my Republican conference join me in the fight to stop the two-tiered justice system in America violating human rights?”

The U.S. Marshals Service will provide a report to the District of Columbia District Court judge later this week, wrote Graves, who added: “Because the information in that report is being verified, the government respectfully requests an additional week to respond on behalf of the USMS with respect to the conditions at the CTF.”
