Tim Ryan (D-OH) ripped a “bulls***” claim that Democrats should stick to highly educated voters.
Ryan pointed to remarks from a Democratic strategist to the Washington Post that noted the party can’t compete in places such as Ohio and must stick to “states that have more college-educated people.”
“That pisses me off. That is an absolute slap in the face to everyone who’s out there busting their a** who just may not have a college degree,” Ryan said. “I will not let the Democratic Party turn into a party where you have to go get a college degree as a passport to get into the party. That’s bulls***. And I’m not gonna let that happen.”

Ohio was once a bellwether purple state that displayed a propensity for selecting the winners of presidential contests. In recent years, however, the state had seemingly shifted to the right and seemingly garnered less attention from national Democrats.
Ryan, a 10-term congressman, has managed to put up a fierce fight against his rival Republican J.D. Vance, who holds a 2.3-percentage-point lead in the latest RealClearPolitics polling aggregate.
Despite his strong showing, national Democrats appear to be apathetic to the race, focusing instead on places such as Wisconsin and Pennsylvania where they seem to think their odds of flipping a seat are stronger. Ryan has defended the lack of Democratic star power stumping for him and has chastised Vance for leaning on GOP heavy-hitters.
Recently, Ryan has sought to cast himself as a maverick of sorts within the Democratic Party. He has openly suggested that President Joe Biden should not run for reelection in 2024. Ryan also made waves by being noncommittal about voting for Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to be the party leader in the upper chamber.

“I don’t know if I’m going to vote for Chuck Schumer” to lead the Senate, Ryan told Politico. “I will get to the Senate and be beholden to absolutely nobody, right? And I will be, probably, a royal pain in the a** when I get there. And that may be a reason why we’re not getting help.”
With the Senate being evenly divided, the Ohio race could be paramount to determining the balance of power in the upper chamber in the midterm elections. Voters head to the polls on Nov. 8.
