Majority of Americans view US global influence as waning: Poll

A majority of Americans believe the United States’s influence on the world is waning, making the country one of the most dispirited compared to other nations who say their impact is getting stronger, according to a new poll.

Almost half (47%) of the U.S. population says the country’s global standing is slipping compared to just 19% who say the opposite, according to a recent poll from the Pew Research Center. Another 32% say U.S. influence has stayed about the same in recent years.

The sentiment was largely split along party lines, as Republicans and GOP-leaning independents were far more likely to say the U.S. is losing its global influence compared to Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents, the poll showed. Roughly 63% of Republicans say the country has lost its grip on the world compared to just 37% of Democrats who said the same.

The growing pessimism among the U.S. is tied to the number of voters who report feeling dissatisfied with the country’s democracy and are unconvinced individuals are able to influence the country’s politics, according to Pew. More than half (52%) of those living in the U.S. say they are not satisfied with the country’s democracy compared to just 31% who said the opposite.

The recent survey found that Americans are among the most discouraged about their country’s standing, with the U.S. topping the list with the highest percentage of citizens who say their influence is getting weaker, according to the poll. Japan came in close behind, with 43% of its citizens viewing their country’s influence as getting weaker compared to only 8% who said it was getting stronger.

The Pew Research Center compiled its findings after conducting surveys of citizens across 18 different countries. The poll in the U.S. surveyed 1,003 adults from Nov. 10 to Dec. 7 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.
