Hunter Biden, President Joe Biden’s son, arrived in a Delaware federal court on Wednesday, where he is expected to plead guilty to two misdemeanors for not paying federal taxes on time in 2017 and 2018.
The Department of Justice began its investigation into Hunter Biden in 2020, led by U.S. Attorney David Weiss, who was appointed by former President Donald Trump.

While he filed tax returns, an investigation found he failed to pay the proper amount both years, in which he owed more than $100,000.
The DOJ also announced Hunter Biden was charged with one felony count of possession of a firearm by an unlawful user of an addicted or controlled substance, which will be handled in a pretrial diversion agreement and most likely spare him jail time.
The pretrial diversion on the gun offense stipulates Hunter Biden must remain drug-free and agree never to own a firearm again. If he doesn’t, he could face up to 10 years in jail on top of fines.
The terms of the plea deal were announced last month, outlining Hunter Biden accepted a deal with the DOJ after a yearslong investigation into the president’s son’s overseas business dealings. The tax charges could carry a sentence of up to 12 months, but he is unlikely to face prison time.

Hunter Biden has been the subject of investigations for years, with Republicans pushing further accountability on him and claiming the plea agreement resulted from special treatment from multiple agencies, including the IRS and FBI, for the president’s son.
While Hunter Biden is not expected to be sentenced on Wednesday, U.S. District Court Judge Maryellen Noreika presides over the hearing and must sign off on the deal.
