‘I’ve chosen this life’: Fauci brushes off threats he received since coronavirus pandemic began

Receiving threats is just part of the deal when becoming a public figure, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Fauci, who is the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, was given a security detail by the federal government after receiving threats against his life since becoming one of the main figures representing the government during the coronavirus pandemic. During a Thursday interview on Today, Fauci said facing disturbing reactions from the public was just part of his job.

“I’ve chosen this life. I mean, I know what it is,” Fauci said. “There are things about it that sometimes are disturbing. But you just focus on the job you have to do. And just put all that other stuff aside and try as best as possible not to pay attention to it. And just forge ahead.”

He added: “We have a really, really, very, very difficult situation ahead of us. All of that other stuff is secondary.”

Fauci said that he and his family felt safe despite the situation. He also noted that he has felt healthy throughout the outbreak, though the role has taken a toll on his voice.

“I’m physically fine, but, you know, all I do all day long is brief people: governors, senators, White House, interviews. I just need to keep my mouth shut for a little while, and I’ll get better,” Fauci said.
