Steve Scalise returns to Nationals Park a year after being shot at baseball practice

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., will be returning to the baseball field at Nationals Park Thursday night for the congressional charity baseball game, exactly a year after he was shot at a Republican practice for the 2017 game.

Scalise told Fox News Thursday that he will be starting at second base, possibly with a little help, since he can’t fully walk without support after being shot in the hip last year.

Even though Scalise is still recovering, he said that he closed that chapter of his life and has been lucky to focus on the good.

“You usually see the bad … but there was so much good that I got to experience,” Scalise said.

Scalise was wearing a Capitol Police hat during the interview and said he would also be wearing the hat tonight for the game. He’ll be honoring not only his two security detail officers who were shot in a confrontation with the shooter last year, but all Capitol Police who risk their lives every day.

President Trump was invited to attend by Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas, who is the coach for the Republican congressional baseball team.

“I invited him,” Scalise added. “We’ll see if he can come. He probably has jet lag.”

Trump, who celebrates his 72nd birthday Thursday, returned Wednesday from a trip to Singapore where he met with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un to discuss denuclearization. The White House has not responded to invitations yet and it is unclear whether the president will be attending the game.

Scalise was shot in the hip during a practice last year when a gunman opened fire at a Republican practice in Alexandria, Va.
