Baltimore Orioles take Cleveland: 6-1

IT WAS OVER WHEN … Jeremy Guthrie took the mound for the Orioles. The ace right-hander went seven strong innings, scattering four hits and a run to earn his tenth win of the season. Guthrie struck out four and walked one, using just 104 pitches before handing the game over to the bullpen.

O’S FANS CHEERED …

When Aubrey Huff homered in the second inning. One night after his 19-game hitting streak came to an end, Huff’s two-run shot was all the offense the Orioles would need. It was his 25th home run of the season.

O’S FANS JEERED …

When Cleveland’s all-word center fielder Grady Sizemore doubled-home a run in the fifth. Sizemore was just 1-for-4 Wednesday, but his two-base hit with two outs brought home Andy Marte, who had doubled with one out.

FANTASY STUD …

Nick Markakis is the Orioles’ most reliable player when it comes to your fantasy league. His owners were happy Wednesday when the Orioles right fielder went 3-for-4, driving in two runs and scoring one more. Markakis hit his 36th double, and also drew a walk as his average climbed to .307.

GOOD CALL …

By manager Dave Trembley with every pitching move he made Wednesday. The bullpen was used efficiently. Jamie Walker, Rocky Cherry and George Sherrill needed just 32 combined pitches to close out the final two frames, scattering a walk and one hit to go with three strikeouts.

BAD CALL …

By Cleveland to go with Brendan Donnelly to start the ninth inning. The former Angels reliever recorded two outs, but gave up five hits and four earned runs. Donnelly’s ERA is a robust 21.60.

IF ONLY …

Orioles president Andy MacPhail could dig up four more Jeremy Guthries. After breaking out in 2007, Guthrie is solidifying himself as a bona fide No. 1 pitcher in his second full season in Baltimore. He lowered his ERA to 3.18 Wednesday night.
