Gerhart: The NFL’s next white running back

Stanford running back Toby Gerhart wonders if teams stereotype him because he’s a rarity: a white running back. But one former general manager was adamant that he would not be knocked for his skin color.

“No one cares about that stuff,” he said. “Teams are colorblind.”

Gerhart ran the 40-yard dash in 4.56 seconds at the combine, so he has decent speed (Emmitt Smith once ran a 4.7 at the combine).

“He’s faster than we thought,” said ESPN’s Todd McShay, who projects him no better than late second round. “The more tape I watched on him I liked him more and more.”

But his race is a topic.

“One team I interviewed with asked me about being a white running back,” Gerhart told Yahoo’s Mike Silver. “They asked if it made me feel entitled, or like I felt I was a poster child for white running backs. I said, ‘No, I’m just out there playing ball. I don’t think about that.’ I didn’t really know what to say.”
