Defensive end has 12 sacks for Penn State
Defensive end Aaron Maybin set a lofty goal when he signed his letter of intent to play at Penn State three years ago.
“I want to win a national championship,” the former Mount Hebron High standout said. “I want to win more than one.”
And while the sixth-ranked Nittany Lions (11-1) likely won’t play for a national championship this season, the redshirt sophomore still has a chance to win a prestigious honor: the Chuck Bednarik Award, presented annually to the country’s best defensive player.
The 6-foot-4, 236-pounder has 48 tackles and leads the Big Ten with 12 sacks and has 19 tackles-for-loss. The other finalists are Ohio State linebacker James Laurinatis (121 tackles, 5.5 for loss) and Southern Cal linebacker Ray Maualuga (66 tackles, 2.5 for loss).
Navy cross country
Midshipmen junior cross country runner Amy Watson finished 153rd out of 252 runners at the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. She completed the 6-kilometer course in 21:37, two minutes behind Texas Tech’s Sally Kipyego, who won her NCAA-record third straight title.
“This was a pretty good experience for me,” said Watson, a Hampstead native. “Prior to this race, I had never run against this level of competition. It was pretty unforgiving out there. This will help me be ready for the next time.”
Towson field hockey
Tiger junior midfielder Christina Boarman was named a third-team All-American by womensfieldhockey.com after finishing with 20 goals and 15 assists for 55 points this season. Boarman, who broke the school’s single-season record for goals, enters her senior season just three points away from setting the school’s career points record (111) and five goals from being Towson’s all-time leading goal scorer.
Blue Jays cross country
Johns Hopkins’ women’s team finished 13th out of 32 teams in just its second appearance at the NCAA Championships. The Blue Jays were paced by junior Laura Paulsen, who finished 31st overall in 21:37.36 en route to All-America honors.
“We improved so much individually and as a team from last year,” Coach Bobby Van Allen said. “We improved 16 spots as a team. The team scores were pretty close together and it just shows the level of competition that we were up against.”
